The Friends of Seguin Island requires two compatible people to live on the island from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Duties include greeting visitors, providing tours of the Lighthouse and Museum and maintaining the grounds and buildings (see details below).
SEGUIN ISLAND is located two miles off the coast of Maine at the mouth of the Kennebec River. The 64 acre island is 2/3 of a mile long and 1/4 of a mile wide. Access is by boat only. The cove on the north side of the island has a beach which is exposed at half tide. A three hundred yard trail leads from the beach to the top of the island which is approx. 144 feet above sea level. On top are the lighthouse and attached keepers quarters and museum. One hundred yards to the south is the fog signal building. Seguin Island is situated in the midst of some of the most treacherous waters on the Eastern seaboard. During storms, access to the island can be severely limited, if not impossible. In addition, it can be one of the foggiest places on the whole east coast. Prospective caretakers should be aware that during foggy weather the signal blows continuously (twice every 30 seconds).
Applicants should be in good health, able to row a dinghy from the supply boat to the beach and then carry their weekly supplies up to the top of the island. Additionally, caretakers must tour the island in order to insure it is secure, operate a motorized push lawnmower and other gardening equipment, have First Aid training and be all-round handy persons.
The flora and fauna on the island is very diverse. There are a great variety of birds including seagulls, ducks and crested cormorants to mention a few. Additionally, there are a number of trees and shrubs, some with seasonable edible berries.
