WHERE IS SEGUIN ISLAND...
Seguin Island is located 2.5 miles off the mouth of the Kennebec River, south of Georgetown Island in Sagadahoc County. It is not easy to access, but, once there, you will find the trip is well worth it. From atop the island, you will enjoy some of the most spectacular views on the Maine Coast. On a clear day -- and the fact that you are 180 feet high off the water -- gives the feeling that you can reach out and touch Casco Bay and the city of Portland 20 miles to the west, Mount Washington 90 miles to the northwest, and Monhegan Island 20 miles to the east. Our caretakers often remark how much fun they have watching the fireworks from various communities on the Fourth of July.
If you plan to visit Seguin in your own boat, we highly recommend the use of NOAA Chart 13295, "KENNEBEC AND SHEEPSCOT RIVER ENTRANCES" to assist you safely into the cove. The map shows Seguin Cove is "NO ANCHOR, submerged cable area." Please do not anchor in Seguin Cove. Other publications with useful information on how to navigate the waters around the island are Roger Duncan's A CRUISING GUIDE TO THE NEW ENGLAND COAST and the UNITED STATES COASTAL PILOT. In the cove, there are moorings available. Please be aware that you use the moorings AT YOUR OWN RISK. Because Seguin Island has no dock, you will have to bring a dinghy or swim ashore. The beach is exposed from low to 3/4 high tide. Please remember that the smoothed rocks at high tide are unstable and slippery.
ONCE YOU ARE ON THE ISLAND...
Search out the caretakers who are there from Memorial Day through Labor Day. They will be more than happy to take you on a guided tour of the tower to see the lens, through our museum, and answer any questions you may have. There is no charge to visit the island, but donations are gratefully accepted. Lighthouse pictures and memorabilia may be purchased in our gift shop. There is a composting toilet facility available at the bottom of the island for public use. We ask that you remove your own bottles and trash. Also, dogs are allowed on the island but, due to the nesting migratory seabird colonies, please keep them leashed and pick up after them.
ON SHORE OPTIONS...
Seguin Island maybe be seen from a number of locations along the coast. At the end of Southport Island, Seguin can be seen at the Town Landing at Newagen at a distance of 6 nautical miles. From Ried State Park in Georgetown, Seguin is 4 nautical miles. The best view of Seguin from the mainland is at Popham Beach State Park, where it is at a distance of 2 nautical miles. Looking at it from this angle, it is not only the closest place to view the island but also is the island at its longest. A mile past Popham Beach State Park, at the end of the road, is Fort Popham, a Civil War fort built to guard the mouth of the river. Seguin is 3 nautical miles in the distance. To the north - upriver- Perkins Island Light can be seen.
