Meet the Board of Friends of Seguin Island Light Station - 1986 |
The 2011-2012 Friends of Seguin Island Board of Directors are as follows: |
President
Ken Young
|
I am a retired Presbyterian USA pastor and chaplain for Midcoast Hospitals. I have owned and operated a local business in Bath for 10 years. I am currently serving as Secretary on FOSILS Board and Executive Committee and Chair of the Museum/Education Committee. I have enjoyed being a Bath, ME resident for 25 years and now summer in Georgetown, ME.

Vice President
Fred Kahrl
|
In 1966, I fulfilled a lifetime dream of serving as a Coast Guard light keeper on Seguin Island. I would have happily served my entire tour of duty there, however I spent the balance in Kodiak, Alaska. I am pleased to contribute to FOSILS Mission by serving on the Board of Directors.

Tom and I have been married for 27 years and have two children. I am Senior Vice President at First Federal Savings Bank. My fascination for lighthouses evolved from stories shared by Tom’s grandparents. They lived such an interesting life and raised three children while serving at various Maine lighthouses.

I have spent years working the waters around Seguin Island and believe it is a very special place. I would like to insure the island remains open to the public and properly maintained.

Many of my ancestors lived and worked along the Kennebec settling in Woolwich, Bath and Phippsburg; some went to sea and I am sure they considered Seguin their light of safe return. Retired after 37 years of public service and with a love for the Maine coast I am happy to serve on FOSILS Board and hope to assist in preserving and promoting the island and the light for future generations.

My good friend Ken Young told me about FOSILS and loaned me a video about the island and lighthouse. I was interested in volunteering and the next thing I knew, I was nominated to the Board. The experience is proving to be more rewarding than I originally anticipated.

My father was a 30-year member of the United States Coast Guard. My grandparents were lifelong lighthouse keepers. At 101 years old, my grandmother still contributes to Lighthouse Digest. I am a part-time lobsterman and manager for Sagadahoc Real Estate. Being on the Board fulfills my interest in lighthouses and Maine's conservation.

I and my wife Lois live on Georgetown Island.
My Rowe ancestors sailed by the first Seguin Light to settle in Georgetown, (Five Islands), in the mid 1790's. Therein lies my interest in Seguin. I serve with the On-Island Committee and enjoy working our fund raising events.

Fog horns and Lighthouses are, to me, symbolic of coastal Maine. Volunteering to preserve our beloved Seguin Island Light allows me to be part of saving Maine history.

I had a relative who designed five Maine Lighthouses and one whom was a lighthouse keeper on Lake Michigan. It was the symbol of lighthouses guiding mariners safely home that won my interest and commitment to their preservation. I am proud to serve Seguin Island, which is special to me and my family because of its beauty and majesty - a truly magical place!

I first saw Seguin Island in 1961 from our family cottage on Bay Point, Georgetown. After 48 years of living in other places, I am back for good and want to do all I can to help keep Seguin Island safe and available for all to enjoy.

As a poet I am drawn to beauty: to seas that thrash below steep cliffs, to butterflies and eagles, to Sequin Island and its guiding light. As a FOSILS Board member I work toward preservation of this historic habitat. I currently reside in Bath and serve on the Museum/Education Committee and conduct special fund raising/benefit events.

I have owned a cottage in Georgetown looking directly at Seguin Island since 1961. When
the opportunity presented itself to preserve Seguin Island, I put my heart and soul into making it become a reality.
I am a founding member and currently Chair of the Nominating
Committee.
